The history of stepping is a highly debated one. Some claim that stepping dates back to pre-colonized Africa, developed from African dance rituals. Others say it originated on college campuses with traditionally black fraternities who would mimick the steps of popular music groups of the time, like the Temptations and Four Tops. We believe that the evolution of stepping is just that, an evolution. Stepping has evolved out of a variety of things.

Stepping was made popular by traditionally black Greek-letter organizations (GLOs), such as Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi, to name a few. Today you will find GLOs of all cultural backgrounds stepping. Phi Sigma Chi celebrates this historic phenomenon by adding our flavor to the mix. The Phi Step Team has performed at many shows over the years. With their mixture of crowd appeal, original rhythmic strolls and stepping with precession, they are truly a team to be reckoned with.
