FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Phi Sigma Chi Multicultural Fraternity, a brotherhood built on the principles of diversity, unity, and the pursuit of knowledge, proudly stands in solidarity with Lafayette College, the City University of New York (CUNY), and SUNY Buffalo State for their unwavering commitment to academic freedom and institutional autonomy. We are particularly proud to have chapters at each of these distinguished institutions, witnessing firsthand their dedication to these core values. Their principled stance, as articulated in the “A Call for Constructive Engagement” statement initiated by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), demonstrates remarkable courage in the face of unprecedented pressure from the Trump administration.
We commend these institutions for recognizing and defending the fundamental tenets of higher education. The demand for “constructive engagement” rightly underscores the essential role universities play as centers of open inquiry, where diverse viewpoints can be exchanged freely without fear of retribution, censorship, or deportation. This commitment is not merely an academic ideal; it is the bedrock of a thriving democracy and a catalyst for innovation and progress.
Phi Sigma Chi firmly believes that the strength of our society lies in the robust exchange of ideas and the cultivation of an educated citizenry. The Trump administration’s attempts to exert undue influence over curriculum, admissions policies, and campus discourse represent a dangerous encroachment on the independence of our colleges and universities. Lafayette College, CUNY, and SUNY Buffalo State, along with the scores of other signatories to this vital statement, have demonstrated exceptional leadership in resisting these pressures.
As a multicultural fraternity with active chapters at Lafayette College, CUNY Brooklyn College, and SUNY Buffalo State, we understand firsthand the importance of diverse perspectives and inclusive environments in fostering intellectual growth and preparing students to navigate a complex world. We applaud these institutions for their dedication to these values and for refusing to compromise the principles that are essential to the integrity of higher education. The experiences of our brothers at these campuses underscore the significance of maintaining an environment where open dialogue and critical thinking can flourish without external interference.
Phi Sigma Chi urges other colleges and universities to join this critical call for constructive engagement and to stand firm against any attempts to undermine the autonomy and academic freedom that are the hallmarks of American higher education. We stand with Lafayette College, CUNY, SUNY Buffalo State, and all those who champion the pursuit of knowledge and the free exchange of ideas.
