Giving back to the community is what we do. Lending a helping hand is in the community is what we stand for. Volunteering our time and talents to assist with programs that helps others is what we the brothers of Phi Sigma Chi find rewarding. On August 21, 2012 nine brothers of Phi Sigma Chi volunteered at St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan to assist Momentum Project with their hot meals and food pantry program.
Twenty-six years ago, the Momentum Project began as an all-volunteer organization dedicated to feeding disenfranchised New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. Today, Momentum has grown into one of New York City’s largest HIV/AIDS organizations providing hot meals, pantry bags, and a wide array of life saving support services at four locations in four boroughs of the city. What continues to be unique about the Momentum model is that their congregate meal and pantry service attracts the hardest-to-reach individuals with HIV/AIDS, and that they provide all our services in a non-judgmental and supportive environment in our clients own neighborhoods.
Saturday at 9:00AM the brothers arrive at the church ready to assist with whatever duties they had for us. We were greeted by Ms. Sherifa Thomas who made us feel very welcomed. She expressed how grateful they were to have us there and stated that our presence was much needed and appreciated. Not knowing what to expect,we pleasantly surprised to see that the people we were helping were individuals just like us; people living normal and healthy lives. From bagging fresh fruits and vegetables to assist with serving hot foods we did it all. After the task was completed the staff thanked us for our time served. Momentum Project looks forward to working with Phi Sigma Chi in the future.
